Pet Foods - Why is it hard to choose???

And when did this all start? And when did this insanity about you know, having complete and balanced meals like dominate our life to the point where you're spending a fortune on pet foods, all these so called prescription foods as well veterinarians pushing specific diets and if you think about it in real life and in wild I don't think a wolf puts together a dietary plan, do they. We're going to dive into a lot more of this again, share like subscribe, enter the chat rooms, ask about foods, all of that sort of thing. Now, a little bit of history and a little bit of the processes involved in commercial pet foods. First off, dry foods if you knew the way they were made, and then I'm going to tell you now so you will know will probably gross a lot of people out. But I want to go back even further in history up until nineteen

3:28 ninety one, now that you know that's what thirty three years ago, there were no nutritional guidelines on pet foods. This happened in the history of pet food after they came out with the claims of no more mixing because they were using synthetic artificial fa palatins flavors, so you didn't have to mix real meat in with your carnivores diet. And now we're feeding them basically a carnivor a vegetarian or vegan diet. And as we know, we have watched the lifespan of our animals, our pets, our companion pets dropped from well over twenty years average to less than eight or ten. And this is promoted, unfortunately in the veterinary medical community, and part of it is because what they're doing, their list of preventions and vaccinations and things of that nature that are actually creating some of the problems. We'll be talking that's ou shots a little bit,

5:00 and the contaminants that are in them and what the body has to do in order to maintain itself. So in nineteen ninety one, the first nutritional profiles came out for pet foods. Now like I say that's a relatively short period of time, and look at how fast pet owners, your friends, your neighbors, and even some of you that are listening tonight maybe for the first time, are going to learn that. Okay, why are most pet foods bad? Because we put in this nutritional profile, which is basically a list of chemistry that, Okay, our animals need certain amounts of protein and fats and other components of certain vitamins and minerals and extra thing. However, it takes into no considered at all what the nutritional pro file of these particular foods are. For instance, the nutritional profile on a cat food states that you have to have a certain percentage of tourine, and that he added that as well to the dog formulas. However, where does touring found in nature?

6:24 If we go back to the natural model, where are all these nutrients found in nature? We find that the tourine is found primarily in raw muscle meat, especially red muscle meat, but also in other muscle meats, even in poultry, which the most dense muscle, the strongest muscle that with the most metabolic calories is the heart. So things like beef, heart and chicken hearts and turkey hearts and pork carts and lamb hearts are vital in a raw form to provide this particular nutrient and you never have to supplement it with some chemicals. This is the interesting part of this is that all these vitamins, minerals and nutrients that we need are always in good, clean meats. Now, to give you a little bit more of a perspective on pet foods, kibble, that extruded product that everybody buys today in a bag that's got a shelf life of two to three years because it's essentially a dead food, no living nutrients in it, and basically is formulated for minimum amount of life,

7:57 actually the requirement and I didn't check on it tonight see what the latest one is, but basically it was designed and is tested to keep your pet alive for three years, not healthy for three years, just alive for three years. Of course, now we have to throw in all the problems that come about by feeding bad food, like cancer and diabetes and autoimmune disease. And you know the secondary things that we see, the crones, the IBDs, the ibs is all the irritable bowel things, the guests, stritis, This is all a part of feeding that food that is basically minimally, minimally, minimally put together for not all life stages, not for all longevity, but just to sustain a living animal for three years. Now. I don't know about you, but I like my pets to live a little bit more than three years, especially when in nature they would be living twenty eight to thirty years, and on cats even longer than that. I think the record was fifty six years a cat that recently passed away in England that was authentically documented.

9:31 However, what we're looking to do here is this is to basically give you the truth on pet foods now. I mentioned that kibble didn't start till nineteen fifty five. The process of making kibble is a high pressure, high heat bait cooking process essentially five hours at five hundred and fifty degrees and after it comes under high pressure and when it comes out of there, it goes into a drying oven for another anywhere from eight to twelve fourteen hours to dry it out. Well, basically, if you put a chicken in the oven for that long, what would you have nothing? Sawdust? What does kibble look like? Sawdust? That's glued together. And by the way, it is actually made with glue. That's how they keep the shape. And when you went too kindergarten, the teacher put the bowl of paste on the table and the first thing she said is don't eat the glue because they'll mess up your gut. So why are we feeding are animals? And unfortunately it's not just dogs and cats. Now they make kibble food for birds, reptiles, small all animals, you know, rabbits and guinea pigs, hamsters and all

11:05 of that sort of thing that's going to create havoc in the gut. So that's that's the first thing we have to realize is the quality of what is the finished product is highly compromised by the cook just the process, the cooking process. Now you also have to understand there's many other processes behind this. When you see something like meat meal, chicken meal, beef meal, land meal, whatever that happen to be, that is basically all waste product uh slaughterhouse product that has been actually can contain things like cancer cells, UH, damaged bruised meats, meat that is not fit for here uman consumption that is actually ground up, and it's what they call rendered. That meat is quite often treated with preservatives to keep it from rotting in the open sun pits that a lot of rendering plants use, where then it's cooked down, boiled down into a slurry, is filtered, spray dried under high heat, which is going to destroy anything that's left in it. And when they actually take this allo, that rendered product is actually supermarket waste, which is the meat that

12:39 is out of date, expired bad. And when it goes into the into the rendering dumpster, if you will, the packaging is still left on it. So when it goes into that rendering tub to cook it down, the styrofoam, the plastic containers, the plastic all of that is included in that slurry. It's filtered out at the end, however, we're cooking in the BPA, the phaldes, the plasticizers, all of this which are known carcinogens, are actually cooked into that core along with a lot of other garbage.

13:22 By the way, the other part of it that you don't know is what was the quality to meet in the first place. Were these old dairy cattle that had been on antibiotics, steroids, hormones that were fed with GMO corn, GMO, soy, and other grains that were fertilized with synthetic fertilizers because our agriculture has gotten to the point where it is the farms are now deplete in minerals, so we have to add synthetics. They're also sprayed with other insecticides. Quite often that silage that is being fed to other food animals will be stored on the ground, not in silos, but on the ground and treated with rodent sides and fungus sides and mildicides prior to being fed to other food animals. So, as you're starting to see this recipe is a recipe for disaster, we are cooking up a mess, calling it something that it's not pet food, dog food, cat food, whatever, and basically forcing it on you as a pet owner, as a pet lover, as a

14:56 pet parent, thinking that you're doing the best for your pet, and then you're racking up thousands and thousands and thousands of dollars in vet bills over the course of this this animal's life. You know, you're being forced into the so called wellness checks every three to six months, where they never found a well dogged yet they always find something they have to give extra whether it's an extra vaccine, an extra medication, an extra preventative medication, something that you have to do that's going to cost you more money. Now. It was interesting a recent post on another podcast called out a post that was in a major veterinary journal that made a proclamation because, as you know, you're watching TV and you see all these commercials for all these new pet foods that are on the market, And of course I've been doing raw diets for decades and decades and decades and commercially for the last two but that one of our first mantras was real food for real pets. We were doing USDA approved, inspected

16:26 and approved meats right from day one, never anything secondary. And actually I joke around. I don't normally mention any specific companies or give any advertisements for companies that do not work correctly with US, but I always considered our meats whole foods are better, meaning we were using USDA Choice to start with, where most other companies are using select the commercial beef for even industrial beef, which is old dairy cattle that have been shot up with all those steroids and antibiotics and hormones. So we've always started out there with clean food, and of course today it's becoming even tougher because of changes in labeling laws. Where grass fed used to mean that they were grass finished, now it means that we can feed nine or fifty nine days of these fattening diets of grain soy meaning corn alternatically modified for the most part, to the cattle, to the chickens to what the fifty nine days is primarily cattle, to fatten them out, make a more market weight, and bring farmers more money. That changes the nutritional profile of that meat from being rich in omega threes and nines that heal the body, to being high in omegasi which causes inflammation, which is

18:03 why a lot of people have more and more trouble digesting beef today than ever before. So they came out with this statement that there is no such thing as human food. Well, again, my montra was okay, is that there's no such thing as pet food. It's either food or it's not, and it's got to be species appropriate and specific, which means on the carnivore that's meat, animal fats, animal proteins are the exclusive diet of these animals. Now. The reason that they came out with this statement is to kind of debunk the advertising and promotion that's going on of human grade foods. So therefore they can change the labeling laws to disallow companies like Biocomplete and many many other foods that are out there of making that claim of being human great.

They want to challenge that and make it basically have it removed from packages so you will not know the quality of the products that are going into it. And this is a major disservice that the veterinary community, those people in white coats that you are taught to respect, are creating on your pet and your pet only, and this is an important thing that you need to know. 22:30 the break, I was telling you that the Veterinary Journal came out and said there's no such thing as human food, because they're trying to change that label. Now. I don't want people to confuse this with me not appreciating the skills and the education of many many veterinarians out there, but the industry itself has become focused on profit, and most veterinarians enter the profession because they want to help animals, and they end up doing nothing more than treaty illnesses that are actually caused by a lot of the products that they've been taught that they have to use, and that is dictated by the veterinary boards in every single state, there's what's called standard of care. So in standard of care, in the last probably twenty twenty five years, food has become much more a item, and hence the introduction of so many veterinary diets, so called prescriptions.

23:38 Prescription diets are nothing more than private label foods, just like you can't buy Kroger brand foods and a Publix or a wind Dixie or Walmart. That's all these really are. The formulations are generally not much different, and any of you that have been using these foods for any length of time know that, Okay, it's supposed to be you know, taking care of gastric items or heart issues, liver and kidney issues, whatever. And generally speaking, in many cases, the animals won't eat it, So if they're not eating it, it's not going to do them any benefits. But on the other side of that, as well, the veterinarian then has to switch to a different either brand and or selection to try to get your animal just to eat.

24:38 Now, does that sound like a logical way to heal your animal, especially since it's all synthetic and man made. We stop and think about it. We're the only creature on the face of the earth that cooks our food and destroys the nutrients that are in it naturally. We're also, you know, we also appelate our foods through selective plant breeding and animal breeding. Two work on these so called nutritional profiles because we're all trying to fit this recipe. If you will, well, in life, there is no recipe.

25:21 We eat what we need when we can find it. Those are called natural food cravings. However, a lot of these nutritional profiles are emphasizing single issues, which when we actually supplement, can create other issues. Now I've gotten a few comments here. Okay, okay, we've got one right. Now, does the water that my dog drinks make a difference? Should I just serve tap water, bottle waters or something better? Well, with the average person, first off, there's a lot of discrepancy and water is by the way, just to let everybody know, water is the number one nutrient, so therefore it makes it the number one food. Water brings in if it's a natural water, high quality living water, if you will, brings a lot of minerals and ionization into the body, which actually works down at a cellular level. But how many of you have a natural spring on your property where you can just go out and fill the dog dish at the spring water that's bubbling out of the earth. Not many of us. So if you're looking at commercial you'd have to be looking at spring water over regular purified water, and over distilled water. Distill water is chemically dead, so I mean,

But going up and above that, there are tech analogies today that use things like electrolysis to reionize that water, to break down that molecule so it can be absorbed at to sell your level, so they can flesh out these contaminants. These bad things that I just talked about are incommercial pet foods. We have to keep flushing that system. And when we look at drugs and medications, all of them have four main side effects that every single one of them list. Whether it's the standardized cough medicine or headache remedy that's on the market to the heaviest of the prescription diet or prescription drugs that you can take. And those four side effects are kidney damage, liver damage, seizures, and death. Now, let me ask you a question, are you willing to have that side effect for your pet that can't tell you that it's going on, or even for yourself if you know that's really what it is, It's it's unfortunate. Organ meat is especially every cut of meat brings in a different nutrient profile to the table. That's why a rotational diet is so so important. Rotating between the protein sources.

30:06 You know, you should be doing as many different animal sources as you can. Chicken and turkey and duck and rabbit and beef and lamb and pork and venison and bison. Some seafood. Seafood is excellent, especially things like salmon and tuna, sardines, mackerel. Always bring a different nutritional profile to the table, so you're getting everything in the meat and in the animal sources themselves. We do not have to do a lot of supplementation. In fact, realistically, without the outside influences of toxins, we shouldn't really be doing any supplementation. We have to make sure that the foods we feed are not deficient because of the growing condition, because of the soil, because of the ford, because of the feed getting into specific foods. I'm surprised I haven't seen anybody in very many in the chat. I would just suspect it. Some questions more on even specific foods. All of you that own a pet have to make a decision in the supermarket, in the pet food store, in the pet store, online on your computer of what brand, what food am I going to feed, what's convenient for me? What can I

And unfortunately, many of you will ask your veterinarian what they or the vetech what they feed and of course they're very biased because these companies, these food companies contribute a large, large amount of money to the veterinary associations and advertising their journals and basically sway their opinion to certain foods. And in realistic terms, most veterinarians haven't studied enough in nutrition to know what the processing is, what is actually needed. I had a client today that came in doug with can answer, and they were researching research, researching UH cancer protocols and of course, and almost all of them now comes up either in the form of the ketogenic diet, which I've written papers on before it was kita was even known about, and raw food diets and you know, homemade diets, things of that nature. And the UH question that the owner asked was is there any scientific research papers we can look at about feeding real food? Well, companies are not going to spend money researching food that you can just buy directly, even from the farm and the producer,

Let me say I gave you a quite a bit of history on the pet food industry, the changes that were made, the use of artificial flavors. Of course, in order to keep its shelf stable for the time three years. You can imagine the amount of preservatives that have to be in it. I know there's some refrigerated foods out there on the market today. Stop and think about this. These refrigerated meat diets, they're dated for three month shelf life. We've actually tested them and they don't break down for over a year. But stop and thinking.

37:20 If you put a pound of ground b for ground chicken and your refrigerator and leave it sit, I don't know. Let's try a week. Open up that package of chicken after a week, smell it. Would you eat it? No, you wouldn't because it's already tainted, It's already gone bad. If you will starting to rot. So if I can give you a a fresh diet that you can have in your refrigerator for up to three months, how many preservatives? What kind of preservatives have to be used to create that scenario, and are any of those preservatives good for the body. And again, if you're feeding a single source of food day in day out, depending and it doesn't matter what recipe it is, one of two things is going to happen, and it's probably going to be both of them. One you're going to create a deficiency because they are not truly complete and balanced. But on the other side, you're going to be building up a toxicity because all food brings good and good and bad to the table and we have to remove that bad stuff on a regular basis. And that's where the rotational diets come in. When you're rotating every day a difference, a different meat, a different source, a different food, you're continuously cleansing and it's an natural cleans

38:52 It's not like having doing a detox and you have massive diarrhea and vomiting right away. It's just the way the body handles the production of the production of food and the production of waste and gets rid of it. Now, again, we have to watch the labeling and what's being said. Now when you look at it. A lot of these pet foods, a lot of them include fruits and vegetables, A lot of vegetable matter and sometimes grains and other food waste, you know, potato based if it's a grain free, you know, wheat desert thing. What they're using is not what you would use in your kitchen if you were cooking these foods. I see a lot of them. For instance, with things like broccoli or squash. They're not buying and using what you would fix for dinner. They're essentially using everything that goes through that food processing plant that they cannot sell you. So broccoli is not going to be that you know, flora of broccoli. It's going to be the leaves in their roots and you know, the bad pieces and all of that they go over to pet food. On potatoes, a good example was actually on the Discovery Channel on one of their documentaries on how they make potato chips and showing all the high tech equipment that actually, you know, kicks

40:27 out the potatoes that have not been peeled properly, that might have eyes where they're starting to sprout, that have green spots that would taint the potato chip, and as they go down the line, all these bad parts, of course are put into a different conveyor and they're sorted through and at the end of that container they go into a big vat. At the end of the show, it actually showed what they do. That vat is actually taking that product and putting it into a solution a slurry again if you will. To that they add preservatives to keep it from breaking down further from rotting, and maybe once a week, once a month, whatever, depending on the facility and how much waste they have. That product is then tanked over to animal feed, so you're not getting nice pieces of you know, squashed that they're showing on the package. One of the other things about labeling laws, and I know this is a short segment for us, but that the labeling law states that realistically what's represented on the package should be what's in that package.

41:50 Now, you know, and I know that that bag of kibble that is lamb based does not have nicely grilled lamb chops in it, you know. And it doesn't matter, and it's often thinking about it. It doesn't matter whether you open up chicken, beef, lamb, turkey, duck, whatever the poor food is supposed to be. Doesn't it all look the same? Isn't that a little bit suspicious? It is to me, which is why I haven't fed any kibble in probably forty years or more fifty years, because it's not real food. That's plain simple. The number of chemicals. When you read through it, if you see that they've added a lot of supplements, you know, different vitamins into it, mineral supplements into it. That means that whatever their formulation is, that whatever the food they're using, is already devoid of these nutrients because it is biologically dead. Now we talk a little bit about prob you know, your vesta are now talking about a little bit of about probiotics and things of that nature to help the gut because whenever they give it an antibiotic, whenever they give a drug, especially anything that's ingested, it essentially kills the good gut flora. And when you do that,

43:24 the body's got to respond and grow back new and it needs basically seed bacteria to do this. I always recommend using raw dairy. And it doesn't matter whether you do cow, you do goat, you do sheep, camel, it doesn't matter buffalo, because that milk is rich in probiotic properties to good bacteria. It's already built into it, and if you let it go to the next couple of steps and you know, do the fermentation process into kiefer and into yogurts and even into different raw cheese. You're going to keep that gut good and healthy and as it's going to help out a lot.

44:13 Another thing that I like in foods for animals a lot of bone broth. You're gonna tell me, hey, Bill, wolves don't make broth in nature. Yeah, you're right, but then again they haven't been fed garbage food and exposed to all these chemicals that we have in our homes and our households, and the veterinarians are prescribing, you know, the so called preventatives that when you open up and read the actual inserts or read the actual back of the packet, it says, this is not a prevention, it's actually a treatment for something that your animal does not have. You know, we have to look at how we're going to rebalance this bone broth by its own nature, is one of those foods that is rich, especially rich in minerals.

45:04 Minerals control are hormones, and the minerals though, have to be in a bio available form. I mean, if you need iron, you could take an iron tablet. That's probably nothing more than steel shavings, ground up rusts if you will, or you can get it from a food source like liver that is biologically appropriate and biochemically available to balance out the body and help make it healthy. I mean, it's just amazing how much these real foods bring into it. So to sum this all up, you need to look at bioavailable, species appropriate, specific diet. It's not about a single recipe.

45:50 It'll never be about a recipe because the body's dynamic, it's always changing, so we have to change that diet to try to relate to it. And that comes from natural cravings. That's why our dogs will eat certain things on certain days, our cats will eat certain things on certain days and not want to eat it the next day or whatever.
