As always, we would like you to life share and subscribe, help us with our algorithms, help us get this message out further and further and further into the universe so we can help more and more pet owners and their pet parents with their health and well being. As always, the chat room is open so you can go in and leave your comments, ask your questions, and I'll try to answer as many as I can. Try to make an interesting show a little bit different from what I sometimes do. As any of you that look at the lead into it that we're going to do it on pet treats and why we treat our animals and that sort of thing, very very important that we do this the right way, and that's where I'm going to help you.

That would be nice, not that I'd mind sharing, you know, the events with some of our other programs on the show. There we go, Now we get the right one going. So what I say today tonight show is on pet treats kind of a d why I thing what you can do and what we want to look for in pet treats, and again the chat being open, I'm sure you'll have lots of questions on different recipes possibly things of that nature, and we can break them down as to whether they're good, bad and what really should be done. One of the things I want to ask up front is and make a comment on, is that if you really stop and think about it, we're the only creature. I keep coming up with all these things that we're the only creature on the face of the earth. You know that cooks our food, and that seasons of our food, and that goes out of our way to make special treats. And it's interesting in that it's developed into a more or less tradition, especially around

3:38 the holiday times, and we have to do more and more treats. Obviously, the pet industry itself, the pet food industry has then a lot of marketing in this area. You look at the treat section in any pet food store, any pet shop, any grocery store. When you look at the grocery store, between people treats and dog treats, that's pretty much the whole store as far as I'm concerned. You know, all the cookies and crackers and even items that would normally be a staple in our diet but no longer. Our things like jerky we treat as treats, if you will now say, I wanted to bring it to everybody's attention that we have to be very careful with our pet treats because on the commercial market, a lot of these items have got a lot, and I emphasize that a lot of chemicals, food additives, preservatives, colors, flavors that many of which could be harmful in the long run to our animals and to ourselves the same way.

5:00 And I want to put us down a road that you know, if you're going to do treats, what's the function of them. I know that treats are sometimes used quite a bit in training. I'm not a proponent of treat training because basically, you're telling your animal that they'll, you know, and leading them into a condition where they'll work for food and food only. We don't want to get that. We want if we're training an animal, we want them to be properly trained and the reward being that they make us happy. Now, when we really look at treats, we're really duplicating some of the things that we find in cherishing our own taste buds, if you will, and think that they're all good for our dogs and cats, and say, again, this is not necessarily the healthiest thing for it. I look at treats and we at complete concepts.

6:08 We do make a full line of treats. Basically, our treat line are a lot of functional foods as well. I mean, this is a great way to incorporate functional foods into our pets diet make them healthier and happier at the same time, and I think that's part of the goal that we want to accomplish. Now, a lot of the items that we make at for our pets themselves, we use a lot of different dehydrated meats, and you know, we kind of go to the full gamut, you know, things like turkey breasts, chicken breasts, beef rounds, nice pecania, pork loined bone as pork loins one of the one of their favorites, to be honest, when they're dehydrated, and of course dehydration is not destroying most nutrients. We cut it the formulations that we've done, we cut them very very thin so we can break them up into small pieces.

7:15 You want them to be a treat, not a meal, although this type of treat, these jerky treats that we make, can be a complete diet if necessary, and for a short term like here in Florida where we have hurricanes and you can't get to the store, the storage are closed. Of course, up north you have the snowstorms. It's funny. I just received a text this morning. I grew up of course in Buffalo, New York. My sister still lives up there in the suburbs, and trying to show me a picture of her car which I could just see the top part of the windows. They have so much snow up there. They got blasted pretty good. I guess overnight, and her comment was to me, do I miss it yet?

8:01 Why do you think I'm in Florida. I got out of there as soon as I could. I love the warm weather down here, and that's actually one of the treats for me. But dehydrating meats, like you say, all these regular standard meats are fine and dandy. We can do any of them. We also dehydrate a lot of specialty type meats organ meat, especially things like liver. I mean, you know, lamb liver or chicken livers, beef liver, pork liver, and you can do the same thing with heart and kidney, all of which are very very important parts of the animal's diet, especially out of carnivores. And there's a good way of being able to supplement these type items if you're making your own foods. And some people are just squeamish about some of the organ meat. They don't like to handle liver and you know, heart and things like that.

9:00 They just kind of freak out a little bit, I guess, but it's a good way to get that in, of course, loaded with all the vitamins and nutrients that they possibly could have. We could also do a lot with different fish the same way we happen to do tuna and salmon, sardines smell or silver sides, and they've been known to do grouper and a whole plethora of other fish. You can also do things like green lip muscles, which are excellent treat that also is a supplement for glucosamine. Same thing with clams. And it just gives us a lot more diversity because now we can vary the daiet even more than we have before. And this is one of the keys to good feeding. And I want to emphasize that we're looking at the nutritional part as well as doing something special for our animals, our carnivores. We have to keep looking at that perspective of it. Now, how can we make how can we make these treats even more diverse, fied, and better. I get a question up, there is organ meat better than another meat? No, it's not necessarily better, it's different. Uh, you know muscle meat.

10:27 Think you if we go back to ancient Chinese traditional medicine, basically the philosophy was you treat like with like. So you know, if I'm looking for we have a muscular body, I'm going to want good heavy muscle meat, and that of course comes in the form of you know, especially beef and bison. You know those great Delmonico steaks and New York strips surloins that are going to help me build muscle. If I've got different health issues, maybe liver or kidney issues, again, we feed the same thing because what we're doing at that point in time is these meats have the same nutritional profile as those organs and those body parts in our body. So therefore we don't have the body searching all over itself looking to put together the different nutrients that are needed vitamins and minerals and enzymes and everything to rebuild muscle or livers or kidneys or even brains. It's already there. It's like kind of like a pre mix of the proper nutrition to build these body parts. So now one of the other nice things about these type of treats, and you can do this as well as again another functional food, is

12:04 that we can add a lot of other things. I just saw another question up there on processing. Well, when we look at it, are you asking if they're not as processes as other meats. But basically, if you're bodying good clean grass, finished meats, whole cuts basically, Uh, there's minimally processed anyway. I mean basically they're they're you know, they bleed them out, they cut them into the primal cuts. You know, you're around your siraloins, you know on poultry, your legs, wings, things of that nature, and the organs are the same exact way. They're just extracting that organ and the processing is probably going to be it's going to be exactly the same for your treats, especially if you're dehydrating, you're gonna be slicing them whatever thickness you want.

12:58 You can make them as thin as you want or as thick as you want. That's minimally processed. That just cutting and dehydrating, and that's probably the best way to do it if you're using it, like for training treats and things like that, you want to quick dehydration cutting them very very thin. Nowl break apart nice and easily. We've used liver in the past in small cube form, especially like at dog shows and for training again, for training treats, this sort of thing that dehydrates very very nicely. I know a lot of the dog show exhibitors used to process their own livers. All they would do is bake it and the oven cut it up into small squares. Great, great treat and that dogs and cats really love most of the time. Now you're gonna find a few that are gonna be a little bit finicky. But you know, it depends also on what their base diet is. If they're used to a home cooked or a raw diet, these kind of treats are going to be spectacular for them. Now, as I said, we can also add to these dehydrated meats, fish and poultry a plesor of other goodies if you will, I like, and we do again in our selection. I sometimes will use different herbs and botanicals to make them again a little bit more of a functional food we're

14:29 along with being a treat. Tumeric is one of my favorites that obviously they can use for keeping their liverally nice and clean and healthy. It adds a nice scent and a nice flavor to the foods. Most animals love it. You can use ginger the same way we've done some with cinnamon, and of course you're only using a small amount. You're just sprinkling it on, so it gives you a little bit different look something a little bit more festive. You know, you can combine things like barley grass with the turumeric. So now we've got kind of like a little bit of a Christmasy thing going on there. Maybe add some beet powder or some cranberry powder. Those are all good little additives that we can add to it.

15:16 And again you're adding more and more variety. You're getting more nutrients, more variety of that nutritional profile into the animal. I use these same herbs and botanicals for a whole nother class of treats again that we process at Biocomplete Concepts, and that we sell it my Paleopat and in other stores around the country. And that's our smoothie line. And basically our smoothies are very very interesting. Is it's an age old recipe that we've used in people and in animals for generations basically, and what we use we primarily use a raw milk product. It can be either goats milk, cow's milk, sheep milk, it doesn't matter which one, but in a whole raw form. So I've got the probiotics going on and that sort of thing to that we can add. We add in raw eggs, we add in raw honey. And a little side note here that back when in the nineteen forties and before and even be nineteen fifty before that, that was actually the blend that was prescribed by doctors as a milk replacement for human infants if mom wasn't able to produce enough milk, if

16:47 we had to do supplemental feeding, that was what it was. And unfortunately that got changed over the years into these plant based milk substitutes. The honey went away and was replaced with h highly processed corn syrup carol syrup back in the fifties, and then of course now frutose corn syrup. There's a sweetening agent that create all kinds of health issues on the backside. But again we use this as a base into that. We started out as an emergency diet, which is also a tree believe it or not, adding spurreleing a powder to that drink, and because of the spur allina, it's actually a great recovery product for depilitated animals, animals coming out of surgery or other types of health issues.

17:50 High in antioxidant value, high en vitamins, minerals, nutrients. We also do, of course a golden smoothie. Obviously, that's quite descriptive of using turmeric. Turmeric, of course, has used in a lot of different things, and it's commercially available in a lot of these drinks, even in the health food industry. We do one for ginger with ginger, which I consider that to be kind of a digestive aid, so you got good digestion going into a smoothy drink. We also do one with triphala, which of course helps cool the body, break things like fevers and things of that nature. So we and this is what we do commercially. But also on the other side of that, I can take any one of my one hundreds hundred and twenty five different herbal and botanical products that I have in my in my war chest, if you will, and I can mix and match all day long, and my animals will all always get a brand new treat with a different flavor.

19:03 One of the other things that we tell and advise clients to do, because of course, obviously with a raw melt product, we have to worry about a little bit about shelf life, and so we use that as for transport and for selling in a frozen form. But we tell our clients that when you get at home, if it's fresh, or if you thaw it out to use it, pour the contents of that bottle into ice cube trays and now you've got an icy treat that you can add to any part of their diet. Anytime you're feeding them. Just drop an ice cube in, let it thaw out.

19:44 You can use it in the summertime as a cooling type treat. And again a lot of different flavors, a lot of different fun things we can do with that. 22:52 We had a few here already. A couple other good treat We've talked a little bit about the hydrated meat. We've talked about kind of different smoothies using raw milk and things like that. Again, we can also use different types of yogurts, kiefers, other raw dairy products which are especially healthy. Again, these are probiotic by nature if you're using it in a raw form. We do not want to use the processed items that generally are available in the supermarket, as they have a lot of different food additives in it that could be unhealthy for our pets and even for us. Now another great treat that I really really love to either mix in with their foods, but we can also do it as a separate treat. Eggs, hard boiled eggs are an excellent treat for all animals.

23:57 Of course, it's one of the nature's most perfect food foods, high in nutrients. Again, the animals love that. In fact, today we had a busy day at my palaeopet had gotten in a shipment of eggs, and of course happens every week every shipment almost you know, they the girls end up breaking, you know, putting a finger through a night shell or something of that nature. And fortunately one of our staff had their dog there and I can say she really enjoyed that treat. Just a raw egg that was fine. You're going to add that too again as a treat in their food themselves, a good nutritious treat that way or separately. I do know that some people who have been doing dehydrated eggs the same way.

24:47 You can use that as an additive with the different meats. And then of course we're using the eggs in our yogurt, and our smoothie type products as well. Now you know I mentioned a few that we do at a store. I mean, my selection could be just endless with all the things that we could mix with them that are all healthy and going to help your animal. Now, one of the things I did wanted to bring up, especially is you notice that they haven't mentioned any bakeery trait type treats, you know, crackers or cookies or things of that nature. As we know, are dogs and cats or carnivores, while they can eat various other food being more scavenger like, and especially if they're in a state of imbalance nutritionally where they have some deficiencies going on and they need other nutrients, we generally shy away from it because because first off, baked type treats are process at a very very high temperature, which can create which is basically destroys most of the nutrients and that sort of thing. But on the other side of that, those carbohydrates, the different flowers that you might want to use a different processed

26:19 bakery items, if you will, all these break down basically into sugar. And when we give our animals these sugary type treats or the types of treats that are made with components that are going to break down into sugar. It creates a lot of stress in a body to try to digest it. Stress is the number one cause of disease because now the body's got to try to work to make something it really shouldn't have to. And if any of you have ever had a diabetic dog or cat that you've had to administer insulin to on a regular basis, it's not a pleasant thing have to do.

27:01 Those of you that have obese animals or overweight animals, a lot of this is caused again by that same bakery type treat and of course that's really what kibble is, is just a variation on that baked and that bake good, if you will. The other thing is, in order to get these animals to eat a lot of these bakery type treats, they have to add a lot of synthetic sugars. Of course, they have to be shelf stable if they're going to be in the store for any length of time, so they add a lot of preservatives to them. And then you wonder why you have a scratchy, itchy dog, a yeasty dog. Chronic here infections, paul locking and chewing, all these little things that are the results of us trying to do something really, really good for our path that we thought we've just been misled in what is healthy and what's not. Of course, that's happened on the human side as well. Yes, we can go to our local veterinarian animal hospital and get medications for these type of problems, But why would we want to do that.

28:18 Why would we want to set our pets up for this medication, this discomfort, this disease, if you will, When we have at our fingertips a whole plethora of products that we can make or we can buy that would be all natural and actually improve the health of the animal. One of the things that I brought it up at the very beginning is why do we give treats? Of course, you know, it seems that of course, seasonally at the holidays, you know, we had we have a tendency to eat a lot of treats, you know, cakes and pies and cookies and all kinds of things. All the parties that you go to and visiting relatives and things of that nature.

29:12 Helping to do this with our pet is no different. However, we have to be sensible when we do it. We have to stick within that dietary regime that will make them healthier, not sicker. A lot of the rowd areas available there, the yogurts, all of these components are available for you to do it yourself, or you can just buy the pre made stuff. One of the big things, though, if you're going to make these treats again, you're gonna want to do what we do with the diets as well. You're gonna want to find the cleanest ethically raised raw materials that you can, which means that on meats they should be pasture raised, grass finished if possible, pasture finished wherever possible, even on your chicken and on your beef, lamb, and of course some of the more exotic meats, which we consider things like rabbit and lamb, bison, venison. All of these and

30:44 many of the fish. The seafood items aren't dogs and cats go crazy over them. Because it is a much cleaner raised animal. We don't have to worry about seeking out the pasture raised because they are already pasture rays. They're not treated in a big processing plant. This is one of the things that we do with the biocomplete line is we try to eliminate all that extra processing, even things like eggs. You know, you buy eggs in the supermarket. Most people don't realize they've been run through a chlorox bath or chlorine bath to kill any pathogens that might be on it. But that eggs shell is semi permeable, which means that that chlorine is going inside that egg. So now we have poisoned toxin inside of that product, the natural product. And whenever we process using some of these things, like chickens get run through a chlorox bath, if you will, when they're chilling it down and killing off the any pathogens that might be there.

31:54 Because chicken naturally has and most poultry has an odor that people find a objectionable, so they try to get destroy this odor, and again we have this issue that we've added something that actually changes the flavor. Same thing. Where as a lot of the process raw diets that are on the market, they go through a pasteurization process high pressure pasturization HPP, and while it seems safe enough, it does destroy a lot of the nutrients, but it also changes the flavor because we're basically oxidizing that food. And because of that, these commercial treats and these commercial foods have got to add synthetic artificial flavors. And many of these flavors that they add, unfortunately are are and do contain addictive drugs. That's why the pet wants to go after them, That's why they love them so much, and they're addicted to it. I've seen them, though, be exhibit that same addiction like attitude with our naturally produced stuff, especially things like the lamb, liver and salmon and things of that nature, where cats will be breaking into the cupboard doors just to get at the bags and tear

33:26 them open and eat the whole thing. I got to call the night from a client that that's what happened, and she had bought half a dozen bags of treats. The cats managed to get the cupboard door open and across the board. They were pretty much all gone, like they have never eaten a meal in their life. But that's just it too. And then explaining this that we get sometimes so locked up into these feeding charts and these recommended feedings, the amounts and everything else, because we're trying to battle obesity and some of the other chrodict issues that our pets have that they are sometimes just starving to death. Literally, they need more food and they don't need to be eating three meals a day. The treats in between are fine, ever specific things that specific thing could be. We just I just love my pet.

34:24 I want to do something special for them. And you know, again using it as a training treat. I mean, if you're sitting there on the couch watching TV and you want your kiddy or your puppy'd be cuddled up next to you, there's probably not a better way to get them to do that, to induce something to doing that. They didn't have that bag of treats sitting next to you, and I'm sure that you will have a loving, very attentive pet that just can't express it enough. This is built of Pet Health Google and we're talking about treats tonight, Ah I see I've got another comment out there. My cats only get treats I buy from you. Thank you very much. Give them raw egs and their food too. They're on all raw diets. They have soft shiny coats, love raw milk as well, so do Why thank you very much for those comments. Yes, this is exactly what we're looking for. We want that relationship between us and our pets to be very very special. That's special bonding and things like that. Again, I really want to emphasize that we have to be careful of a lot of the processed treats. We also want to look at where they're being sourced. I know that if I go back twenty years ago, thirty years ago, forty years ago, a lot of the jerky treats that were on the market were clean. They were made and produced basically jouring the United States, but much of it now was imported. When it is, we have no idea what the quality of those of those jerky products are.

37:54 There's a lot of jerky products out there that do mix in and are what we call extruded or formed, that do contain a lot of additives and flavors. Of course, they do that to us and ours as well, and some of these can have a lot of salts and a lot of again preservatives, colors, things of that nature in them also, and a lot of the bakery type treats that we see, it's not uncommon in the bakery industry to use a lot of vegetable oils. And of course, right now all the clinical stuff that we're seeing is showing that the rise of diabetes and obesity is directly linked to vegetable oils, plant based oils. And you know, if you're going to make anything of this nature, basically you should be using either lard or tallow or even butter to make any kind of treats if you need something to as a binder or whatever you're using it for in that respect, a couple other things that we see out there. Of course, you know, bacon looking treats out there have been a hit for a long long time.

39:13 Why because our pets love bacon. Now, if you're going to do, for instance, a dehydrated bacon type tree, again, you want it naturally cured. You don't want it either just smoked or not cured at all. I'm completely uncured. Basically, bacon is nothing more than pork belly, and you could just buy the pork belly and slice it up yourself, throw it in the dehydrator and be done with it. Salmon's skin is another item that I really really like, and the animals really love because it's loaded with omegas. I know that when ever I throw a big piece of salmon on the grill, of course, you know when you go to serve it, it's coming off the skin.

39:58 I leave the skin on the rill itself, low heat, let it dry out. You can roll it up in the rolls or chop it up in the pieces. Dogs and cats just go crazy for that. Another item there's a good treat for your animal that sometimes people are afraid of. Recreate what we call recreational bones, basically real animal bones, things like pork ribs and beef knucklebones. Pork femur bones are excellent. Lamb femur bones are excellent. Chicken feet, duck feet, duck necks, chicken necks, turkey necks, and of course I can go on and on different wings. You know.

40:49 All these are great treats for your animal. When it comes to bones, most of them are okay as long as they are raw, because they're still soft. Smaller to the animal and a shorter time period where they're raised things like chickens and ducks, even turkeys, pork lamb because they slaughter younger animals, those bones are gonna be much gonna be very soft and easy for them to chew up if you're coming off if you're feeding a kibble diet, though, you do have to be cautious because they are meat deprived and they will try to swallow the whole bone.

41:30 They do have a mechanism knowing that if it does get caught in their throat, they can throw it back up. We have a tendency to panic. We had a rescue that your key that you used to love rib bones, but inevitably, when he would get down to the last one, then he wanted to get it down fast. He would try to swallow it, and then he'd sit there looking at me like what are you gonna do? And I'd say, hey, you got it in there, you get it out, and he always did. It's not cruel to do that because they're designed with that mechanism, But we just got to be a little bit cautious and watch, you know, what we're doing. When it comes to the bigger bones, the marrow bones, like beef, marrow bones, buys and bones, things of that nature. They are a bit harder. You'll be worn sometimes about the possibility of cracking a tooth. Well, if they're cracking a tooth eating a bone, their body is already deficient in calcium. And what's the best food that we can give for rebuilding teeth and bones? Bones?

42:31 So if we start them young enough, we're not going to have that problem. They know how to handle them. You can be a part of a meal, but it's also a good treat for them. Things also, other dehydrated animal parts, bully sticks, things of that nature, which you know, can be even use like a retriever, but they can show them up. And the whole thing is to just make it fun, fun for you, fun for you. You know, when all of us were children at some point in time, and our parents always struggled to get us to eat the right foods, at least the foods that they thought were right for us, And treats were a good way to do it until they were commercialized into nothing more than things like candies and cookies that were designed to sell a quantity of products and not make you healthy, not have any function in the body, treats should be functional. Again, that's why I go back to using what a carnivore would normally get in nature, and with that, you know you can make them so they're easy to store. Dehydrated stuff will last literally years. So as long as they're kept in a clean, dry environment, out of sunlight, things of that nature and away from obviously insects, and they're properly dehydrated so there is no high moisture content so they don't get mold, you should never have a problem with it. And again you need this source good clean components for your foods. Again, raw dairy is always going to be very very clean because those farms have got to maintain much higher sanitition than a lot of conventional farms have to same thing with if you're getting the clean meats, they're not being fed gmo corn and soy, they're not being you know, exposed to things like round up and synthetic fertilizers and things of that nature.
