How To Afford The Pets You Have! The Proper Approach to Budget!

I'm still going to do my regular topics, but I do want to tell people out there that number one share and like and subscribe. And when you're looking at the fourth of July, remember there's gonna be loud fireworks, all kinds of commotion, parties, cookouts, all of that sort of thing, So keep your pets under control. So so with it being Independence Day, let's have a safe and healthy independent state. My topic tonight is something that's kind of near and dear to my heart, something I have to deal with on a regular basis, and it's very important in taking care of your animals properly, and that basically it boils down to what is the budget that you have for your pet. I can guarantee you that most pet owners never look at the at a budget, if you will, of taking care of their animal. They fall in love with this huge, little fuzzy ball of fur and it's love at first sight. And we have to help and we're going to do the best that we can. However, we have not probably taken into con disideration what exactly that is going to mean. And we have to look at it in a long term basis because our pets, basically, our dogs should be twenty years or more. Are cats living longer than that twenty five to thirty years? And you know, and also when you look at things like parrots, certain birds, and that

3:13 sort of thing can be anywhere from twenty to you know, some of the recordings on the cause and some of the cockatoos are in the fifty sixty year range. So you have to have a plan in place as to how I'm going to take care of all of this, how I'm going to pay for all of it, and how I'm going to minimize my expenses, if you will, so that I don't get caught and have to compromise on my animal's health, if you will, and of course they're well being. So with that being said, of course, much of this program is devoted to nutrition, and good nutrition is going to keep your animal healthy. So when we look at that, you have to kind of figure, Okay, if I'm on a tight budget, do I want to get a Great Dane or even a Laborary Retriever or a Golden Retriever or you know, a Bernese mountain dog, a very very large breed that is going to be eating a lot of food, because food is going to be or should actually be, your number one expense. Unfortunately, a lot of households and number one expenses vet bills, and I'll go into detail on that in a bit, but nutrition should be number one. So and of course we have to look at what is

4:46 the best diet for our pats. Of course, if you've listened to me for any length of time, you know that I'm a staunch advocate of real food, primarily rough meat, deep meals. You know, raw meat is what they would eat in the wild. They would not eat processed food, they would not eat cook foods. They would not be eating fruits and vegetables except in a very limited capacity when they are imbalances based on nature. In a natural environment, obviously the wild prey that they would catch and consume would be healthy as well, because they're eating healthy plant material, those fruits and vegetables that they convert into the animal proteins and fats that our carnivores need.

5:42 Today, that's even tougher because unfortunately the crops that we raise commercially do not necessarily have the minerals and the vitamins that they should have for earlier minerals, because our soil is coming much more deplete, and with that that's creating secondary issues when we are feeding in all meat diet. And again I can get into that a little bit later in the show, but we start out with that. So if we're looking at am, you know, a fifty pound dog, you can pretty much bet on the fact that you're going to be feeding between a pound and a pound and a half a day. Look at the price of meat. Okay, if the average price of meat is four ninety let's say four or five dollars a pound, your budget for food is going to be about thirty five dollars a week. You get into the one hundred pound dog class, you're going to be looking at sixty to eighty dollars a week. That little Yorkshire terrier or chihuahua, you might be only looking at ten dollars twelve dollars a week to feed them a good, nutritious, species appropriate meat diet. Now you can search all over it with all these

7:14 commercial pet foods that are out there on the market and find all different kinds of price ranges. I mean, I've seen dry foods kibble, if you will, for as little as a dollar a pound. However, the nutritional value of that food is I can barely survive when I eat that for your pet. The better, higher grade so called premium brands can be as much as I've seen it eight or ten dollars a pound, But the nutrition that's in that kibble isn't that much better than the nutrition that's in the economy or in the mid range foods, and that's because of the process that they use to make the food that making that kibble is feeding. Basically cooking the ingredients for five hours will average of four hundred and fifty degrees under high pressure, and then back in a drying oven for another ten or twelve hours. There's just nothing left of it. So you want to be able to plan ahead when we're doing the cost analysis that Okay, I want that fifty pound doug, so I'm willing to set aside between thirty five and let's say fifty dollars

8:45 a week to make sure that my animal has good nutrition. So if you're fine with that, you're also a great start. Now when we start looking at others, is that the average PETALNU has a lot of control over but doesn't think they do. Unfortunately, for most people today in our specialized society, every time something goes wrong, we think we need to run to the veterinarian in the animal hospital. And that's as anybody that owns a pet knows today that's a very very expensive proposition, and it's something that you can't really budget. The closest you can come to a budget, of course, is the insurance plans that are out there for your pet, because then you're paying a certain amount per month, But what are you really getting for that dollar that you're spending on insurance? Pretty much what they would consider in veterinary medicine some of the basic prevents. It is like vaccines. Now, the first question I have to ask is are those vaccines necessary? And how many do you need? If any? Well, depending on who you talk to,

10:16 what approach you're gonna take, you if you're gonna take a completely holistic approach. Holistic people don't give any vaccines at all, and for the most part, their animals are healthy. Vaccines do create secondary issues that quite often have to be treated by the medical community. And every time you walk in that office, as you know, you start out with the office call, the amount of money you have to pay just to walk in the door. And if it's a puppy that you just acquired, you're looking for a wellness check or just a basic physical. Ninety percent of the work is being done by a vet tech, not by the veterinarian. The veterinarian comes in, takes a look at the survey form that was that you filled out with the that tech may check the heart, he might check the lungs, he might look in the eyes, of the ears, or even in the mouth, and then make recommendations on things that will actually and the long run, create more income for themselves. And that's more vaccines. All the vaccines, which that's

11:48 another whole topic in itself. You can never find a list of it when you ask okay, or you are asked, is your animal up to date with all all the vaccines? Well, there's no list of what they have to have. And because most of them are very ineffective, you've actually created a secondary issue which can add to stress and that sort of thing when you're in facilities like grooming shops and daycares even you know, many shopping malls and things of that nature. Now that whole process is designed, the whole office is that regular checkups is designed to make the veterinary communities money. Now, I was looking at an article here that was just published by a leading so called holistic or integrative veterinarian who does a little bit of everything and basically the advice that the question was, can you have for to ignore this veterinary advice.

13:05 That's a tough question. If they make you feel like you have to spend money and you have to have all these vaccines and you have to do a certain food and I'm not talking about a diet, I'm talking about a single food for the rest of their life. Do you need to be on all these preventive medicines. It's a part of what you have to factor in when you're looking at expense. Do you want to take care of your animal the way you see fit with the dollars that you have in your pocket and that you're earning, or do you want to give it to a veterinarian and or an animal hospital a care facility that really has no interests in your animal, in your pet and your beloved pet, except finances you pay their salary.

13:58 And yes, I understand that veterinarians have got a large amount of schooling and it is quite expensive. That's by design obviously as well, and they use that to justify the cost of that service and an emergency medicine, it's probably well worth it. But in the day to day mundane and things. You have to weigh these out and how much am I going to spend If you're going to go in and you're going to set up an integrated program with a veterinarian or an animal hospital per SE or an animal health facility, it's going to be very very important for you to set up this structure, and you're going to sometimes have to say, no, I'm not going to treat.

14:48 No, I'm not going to give vaccines. No I'm not going to just do generalized worming, or I'm not going to after I wait out the possibility of my animal becoming infected with heartworms or with fleas or ticks or other parasites, I'm not going to spend this money recklessly, you know, things like the so called flea and heartworm preventions. When you look at the cost of heartworm prevention alone is about five hundred between three fifty and five hundred dollars per year per animal. Now that includes testing and of course the drugs that they sell you that have to be done on a monthly basis, or the injections however which product you're looking at. But if your dog has only got a three percent chance of getting heartworms, which it is in nature. Only three percent of canines in nature get it. Should you be spending that kind of money on those products because you're worried because you're veterinarian, because their staff, because the publications and the TV shows and the propaganda that's out there have made you fearful that your dog will get it. Now, a lot of people don't realize that number one, heartworms are completely curable if they have those

16:19 and it's not the horrible process that veterinarians do. They can actually be done with natural foods and herbs and botanicals, and that if your dog does test positive, it takes eight to nine years basically for your dog to succumb to heartworm disease, which would kill your animal. So again we want to look at the expense if you're in a northern climate where mosquitoes aren't even prevalent. But I remember as a kid we had property in the southern tier of New York State and at the we were at there were no mosquitoes. Why would I have my animal on a heartworm drug that has a thousand side effects with it? Does that seem to make any sense to spend that kind of money on it? And then when we look at the flea and tick part of it. If your animal is in a healthy state because you've been feeding a good, nutritious, species appropriate diet, they naturally repair repel these fleas and tips to treat them with a flea product, a flea killing product which is actually ingested and is actually killing your pet's body as well when they don't have them again. When I was a kid, dog gets fleas, picks up a few here and there. Okay, grab the shampoo, primarily something safe

17:53 with essential oils in it or different botanicals, and one time, two time shampoo, fleas are gone. Sprays the same way, those same essential oils and using them on the environment where the dog is normally living, their dog beds, their pillows, carpeting if you need to. Things like diatamacious earth are very very inexpensive, and that product, that problem is eliminated for maybe twenty or thirty dollars a year instead of that monthly tab. Like I said, that's going to cost you up to five hundred dollars and sometimes more per year that you don't really need treat when you have to. I have a dog now, every now and then she'll start scratching out look, and I'll find three or four fleas because I walk from the community where there's literally scores of dogs and cats, probably hundreds, and she will pick them up.

Three or four days later, I checked for fleas, and generally speaking, you're not going to find them. 22:21 And you know, I've talked a little bit about the major cost unfortunately with most clients at the veterinary expense. I see it in the store all the time. People come in to see me quite often at the point where they've been really, really unhappy with the service that they get in the medical community. They spend a fortune on testing that basically comes back and everything looks fine. They've spent numerous office visit expenses. They're still using all the vaccine, they're still using all the preventatives that cost them a fortune, and they've already gotten their specialty credit card from the Veterinarian office to cover all this stuff.

23:15 They found out that most of these procedures are not covered by their insurance that they've been paying for every month. So it's really disheartening for me when they come in and they you know, they look at me and it's like Bill, my bank account is basically gone. I've spent literally hundreds, you know, literally thousands of dollars on the care and you know, in many cases tens of thousands of dollars. And I just want my animal to be healthy. I don't mind how much it costs if I could get the answers, but I can't. And like I say, I was looking at this article that really kind of irritated me in many many respects because it tells you why you need to go to an integrated vent. I mean, they started the article out pretty well that you know that regularly preventive care is number one step for a guardian to keep your pets healthy. Well, isn't that what you're doing when you're feeding properly, and you're bathing and grooming them properly and exercising them probably in your home and in your family it's kind of a slap in the face that you know you have to have a professional telling you what to do. You know again, it says, you know, you should visit a proactive wellness veterinarian at least once a year to identify medical problem medical problem

24:47 by the way early and create and update a wellness plan, and then as they get older, maybe twice a year. So I'm guaranteeing my income by being this proactive wellness veterinarian. But I have to tell you that basically, it says, specifically in this article to identify medical problem. Okay, we shouldn't be having medical problems with a healthy animal, should we. That's the number one question asked you. It says they should also not be focused on annual vaccines or chemical pest preventatives, but on an individual approach to wellness.

25:37 Well veterinary schools do not teach wellness. They do not have health classes. They have medicine classes, surgical classes, economic classes. For the most part, yes, how to make more money in your that practice, which is very very important. And you know they're telling you also not only should you have a complete physical exam, which I've never seen. Now I can't say that, I guess I've rarely seen a veterinarian do a complete physical exam. I see it at the dog shows every time a show dog is out on the ring, when that judge goes out and has their hands on them and looking in ears and eyes and in the mouth and looking at the bite, looking at taking the dog and walking them around the ring and then coming forward and backward so you can see the stride, see if the body is balanced and moving properly. That's a complete and physical exam. And you know, I can be reached a lot of different ways. If you're know of a veterinarian that actually does this with most clients on a regular basis, I would be I would love to hear from you. Okay. The thing is is again that in one of the previous statements I said, okay, do identify

27:07 medical problems early. You know that you want to look at and monitor the pets internal wellness as well to make sure that they're functioning normally. First. The other thing, most tests do not show that they are working properly. Blood tests for kidney that indicate kidney failure liver failure generally doesn't show up until that that organ is between seventy five and eighty percent malfunctioning, dysfunctional, not working. You're already at the point where it is a problem when it's being identified, so you're not so that test is not going to prevent anything.

27:59 And then even if let's say the numbers are a little bit out of range, doctors do not look at ranges and numbers. They're looking at a higher or low value. That's it. They're not watching trending. They're not evaluating based on lifestyle. How active is your animal, what diet are you feeding? I mean, like I said at the beginning of the program, I'm an advocate for feeding law carnivore diets, species appropriate diets to our dogs. I have clients that have been doing and following my recommendation for literally years, in years, some of them over a decade, And every time that they go in for any kind of just routine blood work, physical exam, wellness check, whatever, the practitioners there look at the animal and almost always remark about how good a conditioner in the skin and coat are phenomenal, There are no major problems, that teeth are generally in good shape, their eyes are clear, they're parasite free, when they do parasite tests, and yes,

29:29 they've spent several hundred dollars on that heartworm and on the internal parasite test to find out that, hey, I've been doing everything right. Well you already knew you were doing it right because you're animal healthy. Okay, you shouldn't have to pay those kinds of dollars that you did not budget for the care of that animal. This is one of the big his points I want to bring up, because now when we're looking at it, you're looking at not only the office visit every single time. You're then looking at paying for the vet's time if you have to have a consultation. You're also looking at so called mandatory vaccines, of which there is only one, and that's rabies.

30:19 And that is so that the tag can be issued proof of vaccination, so that you can buy a license for your animal and your animal that can then be text and they have a way of monitoring you. That's all it is. Has nothing to do with your dog being exposed to rabies. In fact, the United States has been essentially K nine rabies free since the nineteen nineties, So here we are at least thirty years later. Why is it still mandatory. Now we're also looking at Okay, I've had my physical and you've told me that your dog is doing a couple of strange things, whether it's scratching and itching, whether he throwing up every now and then has a little bit of diarrhea. And by the way, diarrhea and vomiting is housekeeping.

31:15 It's not sick. It's actually the body getting rid of bad stuff that's already in it, that it probably picked up in the environment, you know, the lawn chemicals and the cam trails, and if you're feeding any kind of commercial food it could be in that could be in your water supply. Gee, most of us don't think about giving our dog special water. We grabbed the water bowl off the floor and we refill it half the time. Most pet owners don't even wash it on a regular basis. They may rinse it out when they dump out the old water, but then they're putting in that heavily chorinated, fluorinated, chemically toxic water bowl instead of looking for a living water you know, spring water or ionized water that is even better, which I talk about on other shows as well. A lot of this information, of course, is in other pet Hell Cafe episodes that's that are up there, and just to give you some idea on radio, there's probably a good fifteen years worth programming. Some of the podcast will be an hour in length, some of them were two hours in length. We used to do varying formats. But when you walk into that animal facility with an animal that you're confused and you're worried and you're stressed out because they're not doing they're not in optimal health, they're not in optimal condition, and you want an expert opinion. You're looking at spending anywhere as from a minimum minimum on a number urgency is five hundred dollars nurse will common is probably around fifteen hundred dollars for an emergency visitors, What is your time worth to listen to a couple of programs and learn about your animal and about your animals' health. I mean, don't you think it's well worth it to have that peace of mind and to have that understanding that, oh, my dog just vomited. Okay,

34:22 yeah, this morning when I took him out for a walk, he was smelling the grass and trying to eat grass, and I kept pulling him away and he was looking at and everything else. And then the next day he's throwing up. Well, you think there's a good chance that possibly something that he picked up that you didn't see caused that problem. 36:38 This is Bill the Pet health Guru, trying to give you great information on how to keep your pets healthy on a budget. Now I talked a lot about dogs. Of course, the same thing is true with cats. If we're doing species appropriate diet, we are not going to have the bad behaviors. We are not going to have the litter box issues. We are not going to have the diabetes and the urinary tract infections and the kidney fail failure that I deal with at least one or two cases every week. It's really really sad that this goes on with an animal that should be living over thirty years, that at two years of age, has had a whole long medical history. It also pains me, and with cats, especially with some of the things that they diagnose, the FIP and other so called viruses that are testing positive in the animal clinics and with the testing, but are not showing any clinical signs. Now with the testing, especially the PCR testing, and we've talked about this on a lot of other shows with doctor Michael Dimmon, a lot of other experts that I've had. Many of these tests are very very inaccurate. They show a lot of false positives. So why and of course a lot of the diseases I do see where we're showing positives on the

38:13 testing for these various diseases are vaccine induced. They've been vaccinated for it and they still have it. Most of the heartworm cases I've seen, by the way, that don't come up from the islands where it's very very tropical and the dogs are really not well cared for it or outdoors and you know, running the streets and things like that. Have been on heartworm prevention forever. But again, you know, looking at these tips that were out there, you know why we have to do it to try to maintain it. Now. One of the other things that I that I run into with a lot of this is a lot of a lot of my clients. You know, when their dog isn't feeling well, they get no answers from their normal clinic.

39:05 Okay, well they went in their regular vet, wasn't There is no longer with a practice we're getting a rotational basis, so there's no there's no basically bond. Your veterinarian doesn't know your animal, and even if you went in once a year for a physical and that sort of thing, they're only seeing that animal for sometimes three to five minutes, if you're lucky, maybe ten minutes. How would they know what is normal with your dog when it's sitting on a table and he's looking at a piece of paper and telling you what is not on the lab test, not on the history that you gave, telling you basically, we're not sure, and then just prescribing drugs such as antibiotics for everything under the sun, even when you know that there is no vecterial problem. Most disease is environmental. It is caused by toxins, which they distribute in the form of drugs. So you know you have this with the rotational veterinarians. You're bouncing from clinic to clinic. They don't accept anything from another veterinarian. So it doesn't do you any good to take your records. Although your records do not belong to you, they belong to the hospital. You have to specifically request them every visit, and then of course

40:36 Heaven help you if they say, well, we think it's this, you need to go to a specialist. Well, if you go to a cardiologist because your dog is coffing in they detected a murmur sound. Okay, all these specialist is going to look at is the heart? What caused that murmuring sound? The heart is a muscle. Okay, it's telling me that the muscle isn't fully developed or is breaking down for whatever reason. Doesn't that go back to nutrition, vitamin deficiency, mineral deficiencies, lack of enzymes and hormones.

41:17 Isn't that all a part of it? And when we look at these chemicals that we're breathing in and getting in our water and in commercial foods, many of these things, like aluminum, actually blocks the absorption of calcium. When you block calcium, you can't use your manganese, you can't use your magnesium, you can't use your phosphorus. And even if you had the proper balance and the aluminum wasn't blocking it, are you getting the young amount of vitamin D Are you getting the vitamin K two that's essential basically that comes from that species appropriate diet. So going back to the first part of the show. When I said that your budget should start with nutrition, that's going to be number one if you feed them right. And let's face it, we've heard this for generations. Now, you are what you eat. You're the sum of the nutrition that you put into your body. If your body is healthy, it's going to fight those parasites. It's going to fight those disease organisms, the bacteria, the fungus, the other parasites. If you will, the mold, the milldew, the body is going to be able to process and eliminate it. You know, you've got mold in your house.

42:43 This is becoming more of a common problem. You've got mold in your house, You're exposure it every day. One day a mold exposure is not going to necessarily make you sick. However, after months and months and months of it, your pet and you are both going to be suffering with very generalized disease symptoms. But have no idea what it is unless you have a specific test for mold, and usually that starts in the environment, and then you have to clean it up, and you're using harsh chemicals there as well. All of this is added expense. I don't want you spending any more money on your animals. That is not necessary your animals. You should be spending your money. I'm giving them better nutrition, giving them special foods like filet mignon or you know, a good delmonical steak now and then, or buying more toys, buying properly fitted collars and harnesses, and taking them with you to places not dog parts, but places where they're not going to be exposed to both chemicals and animal diseases. So that's a very very important part of it if you're going to get if you're looking at pet insurance, I don't

44:15 want pet insurance to cover vaccinations because they're not really necessary. They're being sold to stuff.
